At Light Years, we believe that inspiration can come from anywhere. Through Light Years Likes, we’ll be sharing a weekly round-up of our team’s favourite picks ranging from music, apps, design, podcasts, shows, events, articles and more – providing a little insight into who we are and the way we think.
In this week’s edition, we uncover the kind of coffee shop talk we like and quick fixes that enrich our lives, among other things.
1. Yah Lah But…
Yah Lah But… is a podcast hosted by Haresh and Terence of the YouTube channel Ministry of Funny. “Yah lah but”, a colloquial phrase that’s part “touché” and part a segue into an opposing view, is the perfect title for this series that presents viewpoints of the day. Of course there’s talk about all things related to the coronavirus (people stocking up at IKEA, the plight of migrant workers, and defining essential services), but you can also tune in to episodes that go further back to the novid era, when issues of the day spanned Preetipls taking on “brownface” and Singapore Social. If you miss your coffee shop talk, this one’s for you.
Yah Lah But… is streaming on Apple, Spotify and Podbean.
2. BBC News Minute
BBC News Minute offers a perfect bite of the day’s top stories in 60 seconds. Perfect for a quick catch-up of what’s happening around the world before your first call of the day.
Listen to the BBC News Minute on Spotify or on its website.
3. Nike Training Club (NTC)
You’ve always wanted to start working out? There’s no time like now. All the time saved not having to commute to and from work can be channelled into kick starting a workout routine. NTC is free to download and use, and it offers a good range of HIIT and yoga workouts. No equipment? No problem, opt for the “No equipment” collection of workouts. Now you’re out of excuses.
NTC is available for iOS and Android.
4. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee
Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee on Netflix is a talk show hosted by the inimitable Jerry Seinfeld. Each episode sees Jerry picking a comedian up in a vintage car and the two go for coffee and have a chat. Obama features in one of the episodes, and though he isn’t a comedian, his sense of humour qualifies him for the hot seat. Other great episodes feature Bill Burr, Dave Chapelle, Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kevin Hart, Larry David, Martin Short and Ricky Gervais.
All 11 seasons of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee are on Netflix.
5. Tiger King
Are you living in 2020 if you haven’t a) heard enough of the coronavirus and b) watched Tiger King on Netflix? This hot mess has become a zeitgeist, from which catchphrases, costumes and Instagram AR filter apps that let you try a mullet on have been born – and for these reasons, you have to watch. If the appalling treatment of animals makes this hard to watch – we totally get it. There’s plenty else to watch on Netflix, here’s a list of TV series with which to kill time.
All 8 episodes of Tiger King are now on Netflix.
